Hi Reed,

I am currntly in the STS-1 class. I have a question concerning pre packaged boilers. When they are built at the factory are they pre designed for a specific site or are they built "cookie cutter" and then retrofitted on install?

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike:

I believe that most package boilers are built to spec--People may think that because it's a 'package boiler' that it's sitting somewhere waiting for a buyer, but that's generally not true--If you're buying a new boiler, it'll be built to what you want.

Most of the boilers we talk about in class are large enough to fall into the category Bob is talking about, so that is the best answer. However, if the boiler is small enough you might just buy it off the shelf. Imagine buying one for your house. That wouldn't be custom. Then imagine one a little bigger. Still not custom. Keep going a while and you are in the range we spend most time on in class and you are in the range Bob is talking about.

To give you a better feel, even that small firebox boiler that is cut open in our back room is probably big enough to be custom ordered. You would tell them you want a boiler of that design, then they would ask you if you want steam or hot water trim, what kind of burner, etc.
