On a hot water boiler closed loop system that was recently installed approximently two years ago, I didn't know if it was ever chemically treated and recently encountered a safety valve that was leaking water.Does it make any sense to pump in two to three hundred dollors worth of chemicals into the system without  testing the water condition first? This has been a Boiler Operator debate at my workplace.

Bob,

Thanks for the post. There are a couple of different methods of treating hot water systems. I wouldn't add anything without testing first. If I knew there had never been chemicals added I would add a small amount and then test, then add more as needed.

In your case, a couple of different tests are needed since 3 different situations may exist. You may have no chemicals or you may have 1 of 2 different types of treatment chemical routines in place.

I'll have Andy post a reply to this too. He should probably stop out and take the tests for you to make this easy.

Adding chemicals to a dirty closed loop is a bit like waxing a dirty car; you can do more harm than good. Prior to chemical treatment, the overall condition of the loop needs to be determined. It may need to be chemically cleaned and flushed. We can take water samples to get a general idea, but beyond that, you need to get a look at things wherever, and however you can. Once the loop is clean and free of corrosion products, then it is time to chemical treat to prevent further damage. Adding chemical to an already "injured" loop can make things worst by releasing and precipitating existing corrosion products.
